Hands-On Science: Grade 3 Tackles Sand Erosion at Outdoor School!

The third-grade students were thrilled to complete their very first outdoor school of the school year last Friday! During the program, they learned about sand erosion and its mitigation. The teacher explained the concept and then divided the students into groups, each given different materials like rocks, nets, sticks, plants, seashells, and even plastic waste. The objective was to test how effectively each material could prevent sand erosion.

Each group first measured the original weight of the sand. Then, they used a blower to simulate wind blowing across the sand and recorded the amount of sand left afterward. They carefully documented their results in experiment sheets and compared the effectiveness of different materials and methods in preventing erosion.

In our final discussion, the students were encouraged to think about real-life applications. For instance, they were asked to consider whether it’s better to follow an already-made path to the beach or to step directly on the sand and plants.

It was a fun and meaningful day for the students!
