1st Graders' Learning About Viscosity of Liquids

Not even stormy weather can stop our students from learning! Despite the rain on Wednesday, February 7, the first graders in the Squirrel Class braved the less-than-ideal weather conditions to venture to the Palo Alto Junior Museum to further their scientific knowledge. While at the museum, the students learned what viscosity is and conducted an experiment to investigate the viscosity of various liquids. To test the viscosity of the different liquids, students dropped marbles into the containers and timed how long it took the marble to reach the bottom of each container. It was crucial for the students to be meticulous when it came to accurately starting their timers the moment they placed their marbles into the containers and stopping their timers the moment the marble reached the bottom in order to preserve the integrity of the experiment. Through their overall experience at the Palo Alto Junior Museum, the students got to practice valuable skills that will benefit them both in and outside of the classroom. Although it was still raining by the time the Squirrel Class had to walk back to school, the students were undeterred in their enthusiasm and happiness from their field trip. Not a bad way to spend a rainy school day!
