On Friday, October 4, the 2nd graders in Grizzly Bear Class visited Los Altos Library. The librarian at the Los Altos Library first led the students in story time, where they learned about famous historical figures, including Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, the Wright Brothers, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After story time, the students were taken on a tour of the circulation workroom and the children’s room to learn about how libraries sort and organize their books. The students concluded their visit by browsing around the children’s room, selecting some books to borrow, and signing up for their own library cards to allow them to take their books to read at home, setting them up for a weekend full of enriching literature!
After lunch, they traveled back in time (figuratively) during their visit to the historical J. Gilbert Smith House. During an exclusive tour of the J. Gilbert Smith House, the second graders learned about life in the 1930s, including how telephones and different agricultural tools worked as well as societal expectations during that time. The students were shocked to discover that women could be shunned for something as simple as forgetting to put on gloves before leaving the house. Needless to say, the students were glad to learn about how societal expectations have changed over time and they are already eagerly anticipating applying all of this newly-learned knowledge to their classroom studies!
