5th Graders' First Field Trip of 2025-26 School Year

Gr. 5 students had such a spectacular time at the Palo Alto Junior Museum on Thursday, September 4th!

Working in pairs, the students conducted experiments to locate Earth during its orbit in

each season and discussed why we have different seasons. They positioned a globe

into four different positions with the sun (a light bulb), and measured the shadow length

of their magnetic giant standing in each position. They then measured the lengths of

different locations’ shadows, including California, Argentina, the Equator, and the Arctic,

and answered some follow-up questions on a worksheet. By doing hands-on

experiments and reflecting during group discussions, the students were able to make

connections between what they already learned in our social science class about the

movement of the Earth and day-night alternation to the new knowledge they obtained

on this field trip. What a great experience!
