What a fantastic afternoon of learning we had on October 30th! Our 5th-grade social science students hosted an engaging and eye-opening presentation on waste management and its global impact.
Our 5th graders dove deep into their research, presenting their findings on the staggering amount of trash created annually. Many were shocked to learn just how much waste the USA produces—a truly impactful moment that drove home the necessity of responsible waste practices!
The students didn't stop at research; they brought their learning to life with hands-on experiments:
🔬 The "Landfill in a Bottle" Experiment: To understand the unseen impact of waste, the students created miniature landfills. They meticulously measured the foul gas production from decomposing trash over several days. This experiment clearly demonstrated how landfills contribute to air pollution, underscoring the serious environmental impact on air quality.
⚖️ Waste Audit Challenge: In a real-world application of their learning, our 5th graders measured the daily amount of trash vs. recycling produced by classes from Grade 2 through Grade 5. The results were illuminating, showing which classes are leading the way in sustainability!
🎉 A Special Shout-out to Grade 5! The data proudly showed that Grade 5 is doing a phenomenal job with recycling! Congratulations to our future environmental leaders!
The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session where the 5th graders confidently answered thoughtful questions from their younger peers (Grades 2-4) and attending parents. It was a wonderful demonstration of their comprehensive understanding and presentation skills.
